In January (yes, 3 months ago…) Navarone and I vacationed to California. I previously wrote about Palm Springs and our first leg of our stay. The last part of our trip we visited Los Angeles. It was my first time in La La Land, and I was excited for a celebrity siting, warm weather, and shopping.
While we didn’t hit up Rodeo Drive, we did visit The Grove and the nearby Farmers Market.
It was a dreary day for weather, and we took cover by popping into some of our favorite shops, like Anthropologie, J. Crew and Nordstroms.
After shopping all afternoon, we headed downtown in hopes of visiting Bottega Louie and the ACE Hotel for sunset drinks on the rooftop. Alas, us Alaskans did not anticipate how long it would take to drive 5 miles in LA, and had to cut the ACE hotel out since we were running out of time. Luckily, Bottega Louie and it’s swanky downtown décor did not disappoint:
I got my caffeine pick me up and sugar rush in the form of a cappuccino and assorted box of macarons. Pistachio, Birthday Cake and Chai were my favorites. I never did sample the Salted Caramel (because it was confiscated by Nav). He ordered a black coffee, per usual and a raspberry filled doughnut (or “beignet” if you’re fancy.)
Our last planned activity of the night was watching the L.A. Kings play at the staples center. They were playing the St. Louis Blues, and we knew someone who played in the Blues organization, so we were looking forward to watching a live game.
Fairbanks is a hockey town, so we get lots of college and junior hockey here, but we don’t have a pro team in Alaska- that’s what makes catching an NHL game extra special. Alaskans kinda just get to pick a team, or bandwagon with whoever is doing well.
Nav is a hockey player too, and his favorite team is New Jersey. We’ve been able to see them play when I lived in New York. (That feels like a lifetime ago now!)
Looking back at how empty the arena was when we arrived, we probably could’ve swung by the ACE after all, and not missed puck drop (the start of the game). But with LA traffic being insane, and us worried about parking near the Staples Center, we figured better safe than sorry!
LA ended up whooping the Blues, in case you care about score updates 3 months after the game 🙂
Of course, we had to grab the California Institution – In N Out on our way home to finish off a very “LA Day” of shopping, eating, and entertainment.
